Mother charged with murder after 1 year old dies in hot car

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. – The Newton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ariel Osbey, 29, of Covington, on Thursday after her one-year-old daughter died in a hot car.

According to reports, Osbey left her daughter in the car while she ran errands, thinking it would be quick. The searing heat turned the car into an oven. When she returned, she found her daughter lifeless.

Arrest warrants for Osbey state that on Tuesday, deputies responded to the area of Highway 162 and Rocky Plains Road after receiving a 911 call about someone in cardiac arrest.

Upon arrival, the fire department and other sheriff’s deputies were already on scene attempting to save the child. The child was later taken to Newton Piedmont Hospital, but she did not survive.

The child allegedly died of heat exhaustion.
