TROUP COUNTY, Ga. – On September 6, 2023, a Coweta County Superior Court Judge sentenced a 31-year-old Hogansville man to 35 years in prison for plotting to hire a hitman to kill a Troup County lieutenant involved in his drug case. An inmate came forward and reported that Jonathan Taylor Lawrence had been planning a “hit” on a drug investigator who offered testimony at his bond hearing.

Investigators discovered two ounces of methamphetamine in Lawrence’s vehicle during a traffic stop on East Main Street in Hogansville on April 24, 2020, and arrested him. He was also arrested earlier that year for possessing methamphetamine, but due to the pandemic and jail overcrowding, he was released on bond.

When the state attempted to revoke his bond, Lawrence sent two individuals he believed were helping prove that he violated his bond conditions threatening messages. He returned to jail in July 2020, and officials said he “took the testimony personally.”
