DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 47-year-old Kerry Hood turned himself in on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, after being accused of sexually assaulting a student. The unnamed victim said the Lithia Springs High School track and field coach committed the assaults at the school and in other places, including multiple states.

Two days before Hood’s detainment, a victim reported to authorities that the suspect had sexually assaulted them while they attended the school and were a track team member. Hood’s arrest warrant states that the abuse had occurred since November/December.

Earlier this May, Hood reportedly led the girls’ track and field team to win the Class 5A Championship.

A Douglas County School District spokesperson told Atlanta News First that Hood was no longer employed with the school. The district stated, “The Douglas County School System is deeply disturbed by recent allegations of sexual misconduct involving a former Douglas County School System employee. Our hearts go out to the victim and their family during this time.

The accused individual is not an employee of our school system. The former coach has been arrested and is facing charges filed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation and will continue to cooperate with authorities and provide any assistance necessary to facilitate the investigation.

The alleged incident is a violation of our professional standards and does not represent the expectations we have for anyone entrusted with the care of our students. We maintain strict policies and procedures to prevent and address any form of misconduct or abuse.

Safety is at the forefront of our priorities in the Douglas County School System. We remain fully committed to ensuring the well-being of all our students. As this investigation progresses, we will continue to respect the privacy of those involved.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we work together to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for all our students.”

A former South Carolina wide receiver, Hood was the offensive coordinator for the Lithia Springs football team last season. He was also preparing to begin a head coach position for the Arabia Mountain football team in DeKalb County for the upcoming season.

A DeKalb County School District spokesperson stated, “DCSD is aware of the matter involving Mr. Kerry Hood. Although not an active employee, Mr. Hood was previously offered the head football coach position at Arabia Mountain High School. DCSD does not intend to proceed with the employment of Mr. Hood.”

The district spokesperson explained that the school system “takes allegations of inappropriate or unlawful behavior very seriously and prioritizes students’ safety and well-being above all else.”

Hood was charged with sexual assault by a person with supervisory/disciplinary authority. On Thursday, May 30, 2024, a judge denied his bond.

This investigation is open and active. Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
